Description

This makes me want to draw a real giraffe so that I can get it anatomically correct. It's a contest entry for draconity.org. This character has a history and everthing, I just.. can't remember his name right now... Anyway, his history's too short to qualify for a proper story, so here's a bit of it.

It had all become too much for him. It was time for a change, a major one.
The little giraffe dragon looked up into the sky, eying the clouds cautiously. He smelled no rain, no storm on the horizon. It was going to be a good day, even factoring in the heat that was so common to his native Africa.
"Father's out there somewhere." he thought, his tail switching at the thought. "I'll find him."
No more would he listen to the taunting and teasing of the other calves; the bane of his existence until now, the day when he'd finally had enough. He could take it no longer.
His dam had merely nodded when he'd told her of his decision, batting her eyelashes sadly at him. Somehow she'd sensed that he'd reached the end of his rope. He'd nuzzled her one last time and then galloped into the savannah, to limber up his muscles before he made that final jump into the air.
Now he'd reached the point of no return. Even if he had second thoughts now, he could do nothing about it. He'd never been so far from the herd before, and they were downwind of him: he couldn't catch their scents again until the wind changed, and who knew when that would be?
It was with a deep breath that the calf broke into a run, squeezing his eyes shut against the wind as he made his leap into destiny, his leap that would start his journey to the lands of his sire.
“I'm coming, father.” he cried into the empty air, climbing swiftly toward the clouds as the wind carried him initially backward. Height was what he needed now, and he was definitely getting it.
He allowed himself one more glance backward.
“Goodbye.” he whispered.
